Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center recently celebrated its 27th annual cage-smashing event! Here at Rescate, we believe “A Cage Is Not A Home.” These tiny mental enclosures do not give wildlife adequate stimulation, and birds or other animals kept in such an environment often become unhappy, sick, and stressed.
These cages all actually once held an animal that was brought to our sanctuary or clinic.
This event is also an opportunity for young Costa Rican scouts to learn the importance of protecting nature and leaving wildlife in the wild!
Children and adults alike learn about wildlife, play games, and participate in cage-smashing
Scouts learned about:
- Grecia, the toucan who was abused and whose beak was badly broken. Luckily, a 3D-printed prosthetic beak allowed Grecia to live a full life in the sanctuary. The story of Grecia inspired a new law protecting wildlife in Costa Rica.
- Protecting and respecting wildlife when they are playing or are on vacation at the beach with their families.
- The negative consequences of keeping wild animals in small enclosures, such as causing the animal stress and unhappiness.
- The negative consequences of handling a wild animal…like getting bitten and needing medical attention!
The children were given wooden cages to smash, and the tough, metal cages were broken up with a tractor.
These cages will never again contain a wild animal!
