At Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center, we aim to provide a natural habitat and mental stimulation for the permanent residents in our sanctuary.
This includes providing enrichment activities.
What is enrichment?
If you have a puzzle box for your dog or cat, you’re already participating in enrichment for your furry friends!
Enrichment can include food puzzles to solve, ramps to run on, and structures to dangle from. It applies to anything added to an enclosure intended to provoke animals into thinking, playing, or learning a new skill.
For wildlife native to Costa Rica, this could include a braid with food for macaws to pick at; a ramp for monkeys to begin to learn to climb (if they were previously kept as a pet); and ice cube treats for jaguars to lick.
Why can’t we touch the animals instead?
At Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center, we believe in a hands-off approach. Our team members only touch an animal when it’s absolutely necessary, like in the case of a medical emergency. We also encourage tourists and travelers to refrain from taking selfies holding animals like sloths and monkeys.
Instead of touching the animals, enrichment helps the residents of our sanctuary to learn new skills and act the way they would in the wild.
Learning about enrichment can help the public understand what we do…and can also inspire growing minds to develop a passion for the environment!
What else does this educational tour include?
If you select the enrichment tour, you will be able to enjoy:
- A guided tour of the sanctuary
- Lunch (a typical Costa Rican Casado which includes rice, beans, plantain, protein, and a small salad)
- Enrichment activity (specific activity/animal changes daily)
- Access to the Reptile House, Butterfly Garden, and Little Farm
We ask that participants in this educational enrichment tour be at least 12 or older.
Learn about Costa Rican wildlife & contribute to their well-being!
Participants come away with knowledge about Costa Rican wildlife and the work we do here in the sanctuary. Costa Rica contains 6% of the world’s biodiversity, making this a unique educational tour experience!
Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center is also centrally located about 20 minutes away from the SJO airport, which means this is an activity tourists can participate in as they enter or leave Costa Rica. It’s also easy for local schools and universities to book a trip!
