A new butterfly garden is opening soon at Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center!
The path will be next to the current spider monkey enclosure. While the official opening date has yet to be announced, our team is working hard on creating the best experience for both the butterflies and our curious visitors.
Did you know that 18% of the entire world’s species of butterflies can be found in Costa Rica?
Some of the most well-known butterflies in the country include:
Blue Morpho
The Blue Morpho Butterfly is known for its bright blue wings, but this vibrant color is actually an illusion! The Blue Morpho has reflective scales on its wings that reflect light and give it a blue appearance…much like how a diamond can appear to be different colors when light passes through!
Owl
The owl butterfly is the biggest butterfly in Costa Rica. When its wings are closed, you can spot a yellow circle that resembles the eye of an owl.
Monarch
If you live north of Costa Rica in the United States or Canada, you might already be familiar with the Monarch butterfly! This black-and-orange winged beauty is known for its amazing ability to migrate across vast distances, from Canada all the way to Latin America! In short, the Monarch butterfly enjoys spending the colder months in warmer climates, just like many tourists.
Giant Swallowtail
Giant Swallowtails are easy to spot given their unique wing shape. Their wings have a teardrop shape hanging from the bottom.
Glasswing
The Glassing butterfly is difficult to see due to its see-through wings! Transparent wings allow this butterfly to blend into its environment. In Spanish, sometimes this butterfly is known as “espejitos”, which means “little mirrors.”
