Our Clinic Hard At Work: A Tale Of Two Baby Spider Monkeys

Recently, two baby spider monkeys were brought to our clinic: One had lost his mother in a fight with a dog; and the other was abandoned.

The two monkeys are still growing, and our team is hard at work trying to help them live the most natural life possible so they can be returned to the wild one day.

How do we help baby animals like these spider monkeys?

Encourage them to be “fostered” by adult female monkeys. Currently, the team is attempting to find an adoptive mother for the babies so they can be raised by a fellow monkey.
Limited human contact. Encouraging human interactions will hurt the monkeys’ chances of living in the wild when they are older. Physical contact is limited to necessary medical interventions.
Opportunities to climb. Spider monkeys need to learn how to live in trees and look for fruit. Natural habitats that include trees are essential for their growth and development!

How can you help?

Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center receives hundreds of animals like these spider monkeys every year. While not all of them can be re-released into the wild, following these practices will increase the likelihood that they will one day be free and have babies of their own one day!

Become an Intern and have a unique wildlife experience.

Veterinary Internship

Veterinary interns work directly with our highly experienced veterinarian and our rehabilitation staff. You will assist with with animal intakes, exams, treatments, surgeries, feeding and record keeping.

Wildlife Internship

Work hands-on in the Lifetime Care Sanctuary, Endangered Species Breeding Center and the Rescue Center, feeding animals, conducting behavioral research, and creating enriching experiences for our non-releasable animals or even clicker train our Jaguar „Guapo“.

Road to freedom Internship

This internship gives you the unique opportunity to not only see, but to play an active part in what we call: The Road to Freedom. Aid the animals in their release, monitor and research them and their second chance at life in the wild, the final step on their Road to Freedom.

Waves of Change Project

This project is located between Golfo Dulce’s protected marine area and the vast rainforest of Piedras Blancas National Park on the shore of Costa Rica. Studying the area’s amazing biodiversity, learning field conservation techniques and helping to return rescued wildlife back to the wild while blending scientific research with local knowledge.
